A Baby Born in America Is an American Citizen
If a baby is born in America, that baby is an American citizen. This is known as “birthright citizenship,” a policy recognized under the 14th Amendment.
The administration does not have the authority to modify the policy — nor should it attempt to. If birthright citizenship is ended, children of undocumented immigrants wouldn’t be left with many easy avenues toward citizenship. That could add to an emerging two-tiered society, creating communities of people facing steep inequality.
Our nation’s ideals of freedom, liberty and opportunity will continue to call many to our shores. America’s immigration laws should be updated based on the most thoughtful policy, focused on improving lives and bettering communities.
